| Apex Techie Wannabe | Helping a friend OC his old rig now that he has a new one. If anyone has any specs as to what I should set these components (in my sig) to in order to get the most performance as a gaming machine, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ![]() Last edited by FiveFig; 11-January-08 at 02:57 PM.. | |

| I'm getting into overclocking myself, from what I've learned here, there's no real defined settings for hardware. Pretty much what you should do is overclock it in steps, and write those settings down each time. Keep doing that until it becomes unstable, then clock it back a bit and you've found it! I'm sure people will give you more information, but I'm a figure it out for myself kinda guy ![]() | ||

| When Overclocking, The motherboard is one of the biggest factors. It controlls your steps, volts, and timings. And if you get a chance look over this guide, It was very helpful for me when i first started way back. | ||

Yea, I plan on doing that tonight when I get off of work (7 minutes to go!). I was just hoping that there might have been some sort of magic index that had the best settings for all sorts of hardware out there. Idealistic, but you never know!

| I can't say for sure because well, I'm not there and I don't know the hardware first-hand, but I'd try increasing your bus speed a bit more. I think it was in the following link that I read the HT is stable between 800-1100Mhz, which is the range I used on mine. How to overclock CPUs & RAM | ||

why do you run your ram at 333 mhz (166) you can keep it at 400 or around there most ram even cheap ones will be able to do 420-430 (210-215) stable but with the ram you got you should do 450-500

| Good articles to get you going. Although a bit dated, much info for begginers. MODTHEBOX.COM - Canada's Premier Case Modding Source - Articles - Overclocking 101: Overclocking Fundamentals MODTHEBOX.COM - Canada's Premier Case Modding Source - Articles - Overclocking 102: Taking Your Overclock to the Next Level MODTHEBOX.COM - Canada's Premier Case Modding Source - Articles - Overclocking 103: Turning Up the Heat with Voltage Adjustments A few pages of this article hit extremely recent types of memory configs, with a good indepth tidbit on TRD... AnandTech: ASUS ROG Rampage Formula: Why we were wrong about the Intel X48 I reccommend you read these a fe times to soak it all in. With todays stuf the 101 articles aren't extremely updated, but still best to learn all you can. You are running DDR memory and the timings are lowish, but the speed is too. That's the next step in overclocking. hwbot.org helps for checking what others have done with the chip. The average OCon that chip specifically is 2588MHZ, so your in the right direction. | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | I've been toying with increasing the fsb and the memory timings to get a better oc. My system will boot and play games like WoW, CoD4, and others. The problem is that it's not necessairly stable. I can get it to boot with some higher settings and it will be stable for a while, but once in a while I'll get the blue mem dump screen. Could this be caused by my PSU? I don't know the exact model, but I can check later. | |

What it sounds like to me is temps. I was OCing and getting like 65C and it would do that. But my BIOS had a setting to where if it got to a certain temperature, it would BSOD like that. So mess around with your BIOS and see if you can find it and turn it off. Eh, just my input ![]()

I thought the bios just shutdowns down the comp when overheating?

| Apex Techie Wannabe | any suggestions on a good psu to go with this setup? the one that died was a thermaltake 450w and was less than a year old. I didn't smell anything fried in my case after I removed the psu and aired the case out so I think I am in luck. edit: can't test anything until I get a new psu, typing this on my good old lappy, only thing that sucks is this guy isn't built for gaming so I am back to playing online poker instead ;-p Last edited by FiveFig; 09-February-08 at 01:52 PM.. | |
