Default Opteron 144 & microatx board overclock

Well a few days ago my micro-atx motherboard crapped out on me in my backup rig. I've never really tried to overclock it much, it primarily was used for traveling. My massive Core 2 Duo rig is a burden to fit into my vehicle, much less carry around. Anyways, when it came time to replace the board I thought I would have a little fun so I picked up a DFI board that is supposed to overclock well.

I havent tried to overclock an AMD since the Barton days, so I'm excited to see how this thing does, even if it's a little oldschool 939. Ultimately my goal is 2.7ghz with a nice even 300 bus.

Opteron 144
DFI Infinity rs482

Ok so currently I have the bus at 280 and it wont boot on 281. I've been inching it up slowly all morning. Still running the processor at the stock 1.4v. Any suggestions as to how I might prod it a little farther? I've seen people take the same mobo and processor setup to above 325, so I know its possible since I have not yet increased the cpu voltage. Here's a cpu-z and my current settings.

CPU Voltage 1.4v (stock)
NB & HT voltage 1.4v (maxed)
NB - SB Link Voltage 2.1 (maxed)
Ram is underclocked currently for cpu purposes, so running at 2.6v standard
HTT = 3

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

still cant get it to post at 285, regardless of what voltages I increase. anybody know if there is a good modded bios for this thing?

Have you tried lowering the Multiplier?

1.5-1.55 volts is the sweet spoton alot of 9x chips, i found that to get my sempron 3100+ (32bit, 9x multi) past 2.6GHz benchable, ittook chilled water and extreme low ambients.

Sometimes the chips aren't nessesarily made to be the best OCers as well. Not to get you hopes down, but the infinity boards aren't the ultimate Overclockers, I'm truely surprised at the 280FSB you can get it too boot.

What the memory divider set on, and have you tried 2.8 on the memory just incase the FSB + divider is messing with it. Most any value ram included stick of memory will take 2.8 easy.

As for the chipset voltage, 1.9 should suffice they might be overheating a little, can't remember but i don't recall my NF4 chipset at that type of volts.

Any temps? seems you got it to boot at 2.5GHz what type of temps are you looking at there, and did you try running OCCT while at 2.5GHz tosee if its stable (it won't freeze, the slightest instability will cause OCCT to stop testing).

I'll be glad to help you out on this one.

Two things for you to consider; It's a mATX board and they just don't like overclocking. And its a ATi chipset S939 board, and then also suck (except RD580, which is supposed to be ok).

from what I've found people using the same board and processor have gotten nearly 320FSB, so I was content to shoot for 300. As for temps, the processor certainly was staying relatively cool since I was able to go 275FSB+ on the stock 1.4 volts. 2.8 on the memory allowed me to boot at 285, but it wasnt stable enough to benchmark. Lowering the multiplier to 8 really didnt allow me to go much further, its seems like I've hit the chipset's OC limit. I've pretty much given up on it, it was just a fun little project to distract me. I guess 700mhz isnt too bad. Besides I've got c2ds to play with!

Well here it is! I was home from school for the weekend and I decided to give it another go. Turns out that ram divider just doesnt work right. Who says you cant overclock on a microatx board? 1ghz+ overclock stable. Trying for a little more but having some issues around 325 area. My recording rig just got alot faster!

okay well have you updated your bios?

i wants trying to be insensitive but rather let you know that problems are common and that part of OCing is figuring out what is failing and then finding a work around.

Sorry man........

and do you know the max OC for your CPU, maybe it is a cpu wall, in that case up the vcore.

also i did not see any mention of a mem divider... you might be OCing your memory also and that could be causeing the failure.

have you ran any stability tests at a lower fsb?

I guess you completely neglected to read the above post. In fact, I dont think you read any of them. In the first post I clearly stated that the HTT was set to 3. While I did not mention a ram divider the ram is actually slightly underclocked. It's totally irrelevant anyways since I hit nearly 2.9ghz anyways, thats as far as my particular chip will go. I stated that I had resolved the problems in the final post, but thanks for the advice...

What exactly are you trying to say buddy? That was not only insensitive but also a little ignorant. I dont think an 1100mhz overlock is anything to scoff at. Thanks for the comment...I guess.
