Default DVD drive crashing computer?

So I built a computer for a friend... and as always when something goes wrong i come toa sk you guys ;-).

Well this time everything went fine through windows install driver up etc....

BUT, when in windows i put a disk into the dvd drive, windows freezes up, blue screens and the computer must be restarted..any thoughts on what this might be?

Computer Setup:

Ultra 550w PSUP
Asus P5N32-E SLI

Core 2 Duo 6400
GeForce 8800GTS 320

Western Digital IDE HDD - Slave IDE0
UNKNOWN Dvd-rom drive - Master IDE0

Only guess I might have is that the drive is either a) faulty or interfiering w/ the hdd on the ide when it's being read (all things display fine on the BIOS options).

As always thank you all for your help.
