Actually a kinematic 3D model would be a great way to go. Once the work is done then you could just render it in various poses as needed. I like the idea of a bit of Anime/Manga feel to it as well. Here's a couple renderings I did a few years ago using some models I downloaded.

You got any links to the models you are speaking of? I plan on doing a fairly simple line drawing version of the forums and then use the high rez renders for wallpapers and printable graphics.
