CommanderZero The ring is required, it hold the magnet in place, it will wobble a little without it, I've taken my L35 apart a few time for cleaning, but mine never fell off. Call Hydor, they have lifetime warranty's.

Hydor USA will replace any pump for free, as long as you send them the old one.
He mentioned once, that the only pumps they replace are for computer watercooling loops.
The pumps like being submerged much better than in a loop too.
My L35 had issues once the power cord hole was leaking fluid, called them up, he said send it in, took my name down, and sent me a new one.
