Default MPEG trouble

Hello all,
Here is my problem... My second PC has stopped playing mpeg files. The slightest whiff of an mpeg file causes the PC to crash (usually requiring a reboot). This problem is undoubtedly linked to the recent installation of a 128mb 9800 pro.

I've tried the most recent drivers, older drivers (both ATI and Omega), updating codecs, turning down graphics acceleration (and even sound acceleration), running registry mechanic after uninstalling drivers and even re-seating the card but nothing seems to work.

The key issue is that most games (e.g. All EA games) have an mpeg intro and/or numerous mpeg cutscenes which then cause the PC to crash.

AVI files run fine.

Any ideas? If you need any further info other than what's below let me know.

AMD 2400 @ 2Ghz
1gb RAM PC2600 - 2x512mb
9800 Pro 128mb (V.6 ATI Catalyst drivers installed at present)
Asus A7n8X mobo with nForce drivers
K-Lite Codec pack

...Just found out this: If I crank down the graphics acceleration a notch at a time, it's the point where Direct3d/Directdraw are switched off that enables Mpeg files to work again!? What does that mean... Driver/Codec/witchcraft?

Thanks again.
